Use and care of multifocal contact lenses

The replacement schedule, your wearing habits and hygiene affect comfort and, above all, ocular health. Here are the keys to using and caring for your lenses safely.

Clean contact lens handling and care routine

Replacement schedules

Daily disposable

  • Maximum hygiene
  • Convenient for occasional use
  • No daily maintenance

Fortnightly and monthly

  • Better cost per use with frequent wear
  • Require disciplined cleaning and storage

RGP and scleral

  • Greater durability and, in selected cases, good optical quality
  • More technical and specific fitting
  • RGP lenses usually provide less comfort than soft lenses

Wearing hours and healthy habits

  • Stick to the wearing hours recommended by your specialist; more hours does not always mean a better result.
  • Remove your lenses before sleeping unless the professional has expressly advised otherwise.
  • Alternating with glasses on some days or for some hours helps the ocular surface rest.
  • If you notice dryness, redness or persistent discomfort, remove them and seek advice.

How to compare the options

  • Dailies: hygiene, comfort and a good fit for occasional use, with a higher unit cost.
  • Monthlies: better cost for continued use, in exchange for maintenance and discipline.
  • RGP: potentially high optical quality and a more technical fitting, with less comfort than soft lenses.
  • Scleral: reserved for specialised cases, not for every wearer.

Basic hygiene guidelines

  • Wash and dry your hands well before handling the lenses.
  • Do not use tap water to clean or store them.
  • Carry out proper cleaning with the recommended solution.
  • Always respect the indicated replacement frequency.
  • Sleep without lenses unless they are specifically indicated for overnight wear.
  • Keep wearing time within the limit recommended by your specialist.
  • If you have a red eye, pain or discharge, remove the lenses and seek advice from your specialist.
  • Attend the periodic reviews you are advised to have.

Common mistakes

  • Buying lenses without a prior professional fitting.
  • Changing parameters on your own without supervision.
  • Reusing old solution in the case.
  • Using water or saliva to moisten or clean the lenses.
  • Ignoring discomfort or warning signs.
  • Expecting perfect vision from day one.

When to seek advice

With any persistent discomfort, redness, pain, blurred vision that does not improve, or a foreign-body sensation, the sensible thing is to remove the lens and consult a professional.

Lens care is not a minor detail: a correct routine reduces risks and improves the long-term wearing experience.
